Ministry-Focusing Initiatives
Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. . . . Contribute to the needs of the saints; extend hospitality to strangers.—Romans 12:11, 13
To What New Life is God Calling Us?
Finding new direction requires our understanding of where God is leading us. What is God calling us to do? Our return to faithfulness to God is important in order to hear that call. Finding new direction requires being faithful. Ten guiding principles to being faithful are:
1.Put God First
2.See and Do God’s Will
3.Worship Weekly
4.Pray Daily
5.Study and Know God’s Word
6.Love and Serve Others
7.Tithe Thankfully
8.Share the Gospel
9.Participate at Church
10.Repent Unfaithfulness.
Everyone is encouraged to get involved as we go forward to make our church more visible and responsive to the community in which it is located.
Faith Community Nurse
. . . to tend the flock of God that is in your charge, exercising the oversight, not under compulsion but willingly, as God would have you do it.—1 Peter 5:2
The faith community nurse works with the pastor and the health ministry committee to promote whole-person health by addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. She is many things to many people, including:
•Advocate
•Personal Health Counselor
•Health Educator and Promoter
•Facilitator
•Coordinator of Caregiver Volunteers
•Integrator of Faith within the Faith Community.
Leona Sheffield, R.N., B.S., has been the faith community nurse at St. Andrew Lutheran Church since 1994. During 2008, she completed a 5-day continuing education course for faith community nurses—a week of spiritual renewal as well as health-related training.
Leona monitors the health of the people by offering monthly blood pressure checks.
The faith community nurse is a volunteer who is available to church members by calling the church office, calling the pastor, or calling her at home. She advises the people of St. Andrew in the articles she writes each month for the church newsletter.
Prayer Ministry
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks for all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.—1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
The Partners in Prayer ministry is a group of dedicated St. Andrew members who pray by name daily for all persons on our prayer list, lifting up in prayer all who are in need of healing and comfort from physical, mental, or emotional concerns in their lives. Members of our church family are invited to become a part of this important ministry as we offer intercessory prayers for St. Andrew members as well as family and friends of the congregation. We know that there is power in prayer whether it be in church or in this case as a Partner in Prayer. You can submit a name for prayer using the prayer request cards in the pew racks throughout the sanctuary or by calling the church office.
Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.—Hebrews 13:16
ELCA World Hunger Program www.elca.org
ELCA World Hunger is a comprehensive program that addresses the causes of hunger and poverty. The people of St. Andrew demonstrate responsible stewardship in support of the ELCA continuing hunger appeal with annual donations of $5,000.
LWR (Lutheran World Relief) www.lwr.org
Lutheran World Relief is a ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), individuals, and parish groups in international relief, development, advocacy and social responsibility. Lutheran World Relief works with partners in 35 countries to help people grow food, improve health, strengthen communities, end conflict, build livelihoods, and recover from disasters. The people of St. Andrew support Lutheran World Relief with donations of items for layettes and school and health kits that are assembled by the women’s service group for delivery to people in need around the world. Our church women also collect fabric and sew quilts that are distributed by Lutheran World Relief around the world to refugees and others in need.
CASA (Community Action Stops Abuse) www.casa-stpete.org
Since 1977, CASA has provided refuge, crisis intervention, advocacy, professional training, and community outreach to victims of domestic violence in the Tampa Bay area. The people of St. Andrew generously support CASA during the Christmas season with the donation of new gifts for the women and children at CASA.
OA (Operation Attack) www.operationattack.org
Operation Attack is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit, non-government-funded organization that provides food and clothing to low-income families with children in St. Petersburg. We continually support Operation Attack with the collection and delivery of non-perishable food items throughout the year.
AA (Alcoholics Anonymous)
Alcoholics Anonymous meets at 8 p.m. each Monday in our fellowship hall.
Crop Walk
St. Andrew and its McMannis Preschool and Child Care Center participate annually in the Crop Walk, sponsored by Church World Service to combat world hunger. Members of a dozen other churches and students from Eckerd College also participate. The walk is held from the Sunshine Center, 330 Fifth Street North in St. Petersburg. The food and money donations are collected before the walk begins.
